FAQ – Laser Hair Removal

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser is one certain wavelength that travels into the skin, down the hair shaft to the follicle, attracting and absorbing the dark pigment within the hair. Each session the laser light is converted from light to heat energy, damaging the hair follicle leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected.

Is Laser hair removal safe?

Yes, we have highly skilled/trained Aestheticians who provide you with a safe and effective treatment within a comfortable environment. We use only medical grade lasers and tailor treatments that are best suited to you. Laser of any sort becomes dangerous when people who are untrained or under qualified begin performing treatments that they don’t have enough knowledge or experience in performing.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

No, we strongly advise our patients that laser hair removal is a permanent reduction, not removal. There are many factors that can influence and stimulate hair growth such as; age, medication, hormones, pregnancy, illness and disease. Therefore, we cannot categorize hair removal as permanent. In saying this, if patients are consistent and follow through with their series of treatments, you should see approx. 80-90% reduction of the hair growth. However, a lot of patients find that the hair growth that comes through is very fine and sporadic that they tend not to worry.

Can I shave/wax/pluck in between my treatments?

We strongly suggest not to wax or pluck in between your hair removal treatments as we need the hair to be present and active in the hair follicle. You may shave in between your treatments if need be, although we recommended to keep it minimal to see the best results. We suggest you shave the treated area 1-2 days before your treatment so as we can achieve a better penetration of the laser right down to the hair follicle and not just singing the hairs on the surface.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

Laser can feel like slight heat building within the skin, although most clients find our laser to be quite comfortable. Most people with lighter skin should feel no pain as they will undergo laser hair removal with the Light Sheer Desire, which is considered the latest and pain free hair removal. Other people describe the feeling similar to a pinch of a rubber band.  Although pain is an individual feeling, most clients express the sensation as easily tolerable.

What areas can be treated?

We can treat any part of the body that has unwanted hair growth. Laser best works on hair growth with a dark in pigment for the laser light to absorb and destroy it. Therefore, laser will not work on red, white or grey hairs as they do not have sufficient pigment.

What skin types can be treated?

We have medical grade lasers that can treat all skin types from white Caucasian skin to dark European skin.

How will I feel after my treatment? Are there any possible side effects?

Similar to waxing, some slight swelling and redness may occur post treatment and can last 2-24 hours in some patients. Most patients find the redness dies down quite quickly and has gone once they arrive home. We recommend applying an aloe vera gel to take any heat out of the follicles and to soothe the treated area.

How many treatments will I need?

Each area needs a minimum 6 -8 treatments to achieve desired results. We recommend all of our patients to continue their treatments consistently until they see very minimal hair growth present. Areas on the body that are hormonal (face, pubic area, chest, stomach and backs of thighs) may need a few more sessions and maintenance treatments to keep hair growth very minimal.

What’s the ideal length of time between Laser Hair Removal treatments?

Ideally, we strongly suggest coming in for your treatment once every 4-6 weeks until we see a reduction in the hair. Once the hair growth becomes slower, finer and patchier, we can then push your treatments out to 8 weeks, 12 weeks and so on until we see close to minimal growth in the follicles. It may also be advisable to have a touch up treatment once every 6-12 months if you find very fine and sporadic hairs coming through due to hormones, medication, age etc.

When is the best time of year to have laser hair treatments?

In general, the best time of year to have Laser Hair Removal is during the colder months, as the procedure should always be performed on untanned skin and clients are advised to avoid sun exposure after treatments. Since several treatments are required for best results, by the time summer arrives you should be laser smooth and ready for the beach!

How long does a session take?

Depending on which areas of the body we are treating, treatment time can range anywhere from 30 minutes – 2.0 hours.

When will I see results?

Results vary among patients although majority of patients see a reduction in the hair from the 2nd-3rd treatment. Each session, the hairs that are present are a lot finer, weaker with a slower growth.
